The Ask
We were tasked with creating a comprehensive donation system that would take the user from exploring projects to donate to, to making a donation in the most streamlined way possible. It needed to present information clearly and concisely, encourage exploration to find the best suited project, present projects based on different filters.
My Role
Product designer in charge of research, feature definition and UX design.
The Challenge
The challenge was to create a complex and robust yet simple system to present, find and fund projects. The company behind it will support these projects by pledging a predetermined amount of money to each that will complete funding, once the “tipping over” amount would be raised by the community.
Defining the Problem
Research Methods Used
Main research focus went to understand the users from the existing grassroots movement and their needs.
Secondary focus was market research of different donation and crowdsourcing tools currently available.
Key Guiding Elements:
3.5 key users: Project backer, Project backer (Corp. Employee), Project Creator and administrator.
Employee Led
Accountability and transparency are needed for scalability.
Discovery of a secondary social network opportunity. People not only want to donate money, they want to donate skills and time.
Key differentiator: Corporation will finish funding projects after a “tipping” point. Leverage company’s backing and communicate it through the platform as differentiating element from other donation options.
Unique User Flows -
The platform needs to serve 3.5 key users: Project backer, Project backer (Corp. Employee), Project Creator and administrator.
Project creators and administrators: Need a dashboard that clearly communicates the information they need to accomplish their goals.
Main Goals:
For Creator: Launch project, Get Funding, Communicate with backers.
For Administrator: Approve/Veto projects, See amount of donations, See amount contributed.
Designing the Solution
A robust, minimal and transparent system that connects users with projects.
The final Look and UI are heavily influenced by the brand's styling guide.
On the other side of the project, we also needed a solution to manage and update the projects.
Project Creator requires a dashboard with progressive disclosure, with different stages of information included depending on where they are in the process.
Dashboards:
Platform Administrator
Full view of platform health
Ability to run reports
Ability to isolate single elements: Projects, Creators, Donations, etc.
